The film “Superman Returns” is directed by Bryan Singer.  Bryan is a talented Hollywood writer, producer and director.  He graduated from USC (University of Southern California) cinema school in 1989.  Bryan grew up in New Jersey and was childhood friends with actor Ethan Hawke.  Brandon graduated from West Windsor-Plainsboro High School in New Jersey and then briefly attended The School Of Visual Arts in New York City before moving to California.

Bryan’s favorite movie is “Jaws” and he named his production company, ”Bad Hat Harry Productions” after a line in the famous movie.  Bryan was always a huge science fiction fan.  He loved Star Trek and was able to do a cameo spot in “Star Trek: Nemesis” in 2002.

Bryan won acclaim for directing the movie “The Usual Suspects” in 1995.  The movie starred Stephen Baldwin and Kevin Spacey.  Kevin Spacey won the best supporting actor oscar for his portrayal of Roger ”Verbal” Kint in the movie. Bryan went on to direct many other things but is most famous for directing X-Men in 2000 and X-2, the sequel, in 2003, which he also produced.

Bryan Singer has directed many movies.  His first movie was “Lions Den” in 1988. In 1993 he directed “Public Access”.  He went on to direct “The Usual Suspects” in 1995 and “Apt Pupil” in 1998.  He then directed the well-known X-Men movies.  Bryan became famous among comic book aficionados, making him a good choice to direct “Superman Returns”.

There is already a script for the “Superman Returns” sequel, due to be out in 2009, with Bryan Singer again directing.  One unique aspect of the film is that Singer uses the previous Superman films as a loose background for the new film.  He feels that people already have some pre-conceived ideas about Superman, mainly from the past movies, and he considers those when attempting to script the new movies.

Bryan has always felt a similarity to the Superman / Clark Kent character.  They are both adopted.  They are both only children.  Growing up he felt an awkwardness that is also present in Clark Kent.  Singer wanted to portray Superman as the hero he has always been, without cynicism.
